The DIRECTV app allows DIRECTV customers to watch live TV, access On Demand content, and schedule recordings on their DVR. No additional equipment is needed, and there is no extra cost. To use the app, customers must have a Residential Home account registered on DIRECTV's website. Watching On Demand or select live TV streaming channels outside the home requires an active Wi-Fi or 3G/4G internet connection. Availability of content is based on the customer's programming package and premium service. The app also allows for DVR streaming and downloading, but this requires an Internet-connected Genie HD DVR model HR44 or higher and a compatible mobile device. The app also features Nielsen's measurement software for market research purposes.
